How do I properly collect my saliva sample (for adults kits)?
The instructions for the correct collection of saliva in the adult kits are reflected inside the DNA kit that arrives at your home so that you do not have any questions at the time of collection. The procedure is very simple:
Before the saliva DNA test
As it is a genetic test, it is not necessary to perform it on an empty stomach. However, you should not eat, drink, smoke, chew gum or brush your teeth in the 30 minutes prior to taking the sample..
There is no problem performing this DNA test with saliva if you are pregnant or taking medication. However, the DNA we extract from saliva is obtained from both the cells of the mouth epithelium and the white blood cells present in it. Since white blood cells can represent up to 70% of the total number of cells processed, it is recommended that those people who have a decrease in the levels of white blood cells (due to disease, chemotherapeutic drugs…), wait until their level of white blood cells is normalised before performing the test, in order to ensure a good quantity and quality of the DNA to be analysed.
Caution: Do not ingest. If the solution comes into contact with the eyes or skin, wash with plenty of water. Keep out of the reach of children.
During the saliva DNA test
Step 1: Spit into the funnel until the amount of saliva (not bubbles) reaches the marked line. (Note: if saliva does not flow easily, gently shake the collection tube.)
Step 2: Hold the tube upright and unscrew the funnel (Note: Before removing the funnel, shake it gently to ensure that the preservative solution flows into the tube).
Step 3: Close the collection tube with the cap.
Step 4: Shake the tube up and down 5 times to mix the saliva and preservative solution. Discard the used funnel.
Step 5: Send us the sample back: Once the saliva sample has been collected, send it back to us at no additional cost. If you are sending it from Europe, print the label you downloaded after registration and attach it to the plastic bag under the blue tray. If you are shipping from the USA, use the label inside your kit and go to a UPS office. If you are shipping from a different region, please contact us at [email protected] to find out how to do this. Remember to put the reservoir inside the box and the box inside the bag, making sure that the bag has a shipping label already attached. That’s it! In 4-6 weeks we will contact you to notify you of the availability of your results.
Preservation of the saliva DNA test
It is not necessary to keep the sample cold, the preservative liquid in the tube allows optimum conservation at room temperature (15-30ºC) for 12 months after taking the sample.
