Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic disease fundamentally linked to smoking. It causes a permanent obstruction of the bronchial airways which makes air passage difficult. It worsens over years due to inflammation.

COPD is preventable, especially if one quits smoking. In its early phases, there may be no symptoms which is why the illness is not diagnosed until it is in advanced stages. Although there is no definite cure, with adequate treatment the symptoms can be mitigated and the lung function notably improved.
