Carisoprodol (Adverse effects)

Carisoprodol is a muscle relaxant, used in the treatment of acute back pain, among others. It is metabolized by cytochrome CYP2C19 so individuals with low activity may have greater exposure to the drug and more adverse effects.

Central skeletal muscle relaxant. Carisoprodol acts on the neural systems that control muscle pitch and movement.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Hypersensitivity to carisoprodol and meprobamate. Do not administer carisoprodol in case of myasthenia gravis or porphyria. Do not take along with alcohol and psychotropic drugs or CNS depressants. Do not administer during pregnancy and lactation.

PRECAUTIONS

Precaution should be taken in patients with hepatic insufficiency, risk of psychological dependence and abuse.

It is not indicated in children.

SIDE EFFECTS

Hypersensibility, skin rush and erythematous reactions.

Somnolence, dizziness, vertigo, headache, ataxia, agitation, irritability, insomnia.

Tachycardia, postural hypotension. Nausea, vomiting, hiccups, epigastric discomfort. Transient quadriplegia, temporary loss of vision, diplopia, dysarthria, euphoria, confusion, disorientation.

PHARMACOLOGIC INTERACTIONS

Carisoprodol potentiates effect of narcotics, CNS depressants or barbiturates.
