Treatment of arterial hypertension with common drugs

Calcium channel blockers are drugs used to lower blood pressure. The efficacy of these drugs may be affected by the presence of polymorphisms in the NPPA gene, which codes for a protein involved in blood pressure regulation.

Amlodipine is used alone or together with other medications to treat hypertension, angina (chest pain, beginning of heart attack) and heart attacks. It belongs to a class of medications called calcium channel blockers (or calcium antagonists). They lower blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels so that the heart can pump more efficiently. Amlodipine controls chest pain by increasing the blood supply to the heart. When taken regularly, Amlodipine controls chest pain but will not stop the pain once it has started.
